以大精進做禪修
密勒日巴以大精進做禪修。一開始時，他是在馬爾巴住處附近的山洞修持了11個月，在頭上頂着一盞油燈日以繼夜地不斷禪坐。他將餘生都用於在不同的山洞禪修：六個外堡壘、六個內堡壘、六個密堡壘、六個極密堡壘，以及四個著名的山洞和四個不著名的山洞。
「甚深義」指的是方便道的那洛六法，以及解脫道的大手印。

The force of meditating with great diligence
Milarepa meditated with great diligence. He began by practicing in a cave near Marpa's residence for eleven months, sitting in meditation continuously day and night with a burning butter lamp on his head. He spent the rest of his life meditating in various caves: the six outer fortresses, the six inner fortresses, the six secret fortresses, the six most secret fortresses, the four well-known caves, and the four unknown caves.
"Profound nature" refers to practice of the six dharmas of Nāropa, the path of method, and to the practice of mahāmudrā, the path of liberation.
